Sometimes there are artists who cross all kinds of borders naturally, like for instance the ones between countries, musical tastes and generation gaps. Max Meser is one of those. He has two nationalities: Spanish and Dutch. But essentially he sees himself as a European. "When you've listened to The Beatles from an early age onwards, you automatically look across borders," he says. No flaw in that argument.
In terms of taste Meser fits equally well with young geezers from today’s pop scene like Miles Kane and Jake Bugg, but just as much with blasts from the past like sixties pop icons such as The Kinks and The Who. There is something in his guitar playing that touches upon fifties rock 'n' roll, that very same crystal clear jingly jangly guitar sound that made nineties indie pop band The La's from Liverpool so irresistible. With him the times and influences inadvertently roll in to one.
The boy grew up, constantly adapting himself to many challenges. Meser (22) hails from the Costa Brava in Spain. There he played with musicians from all over Europe, as a busker out on the streets and in the pub. When Jan van Dorsten, the owner of the renowned record store Record Palace opposite to the Paradiso club in Amsterdam, invited him for an in-store on Record Store Day in 2012, he decided to buy a one-way ticket to Amsterdam. In his eyes, the Netherlands, his father's birthplace, is the Promised Land to launch a career in pop. ‘Spain is simply not a suitable country to start a band,’ he explains. In the Netherlands Meser grabs every opportunity to realize his dream. He does both solo acoustic shows - such as supporting local stars Tangerine - but also gigs with his own band.
Here you see a young adventurer, who dares to try his luck somewhere else. At the same time he eagerly accepts all help of seasoned musicians from the sixties or from his contemporaries. For his debut album, he has cooperated with the much in demand producer Matthijs van Duijvenbode (of Tim Knol and Douwe Bob-fame). A release date is set for 2015.
