Beirut-based Sharif Sehnaoui uses prepared, extended and often percussive playing techniques to realize a wide range of non-traditional sonorities on acoustic guitar. Old and New Acoustics offers two compositions, one long (more than 30 minutes in length) and the other much shorter, that ebb, flow and pulsate in fascinating and constantly changing ways.
The long work, “To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before,” is at times relentless in its intensity, and (in fitting the titular Star Trek reference) wide-screen and spacious in effect. Beginning with bowed-sounding patterns, it moves through episodes that rumble, ruminate, ring, peal, pound, sparkle and ripple – sometimes all at once. Unfolding within a well-developed sense of form and structure, the piece is ultimately revealed as a long-form immersion in overtone haze and complex metallic-timbred pointillism, with wood and metal resonating and vibrating in sonic fields of varying complexity, density and dynamics. Remarkably, all of this is done with no overdubs or edits: the piece was recorded in one take, in real time.
The second piece, “Trane,” does some of the same within its shorter seven-minute duration, beginning with a low-end essay that is, in an abstract and refracted way, reminiscent of a Jimmy Garrison bass solo or the cycling patterns churning beneath Coltrane’s Africa/Brass, before evolving into a sparkling effusion of gentle, bell-like tones.
Beyond a name-check, there might be at least one thing that Sharif Sehnaoui’s music shares with that of John Coltrane. There is a strong and restless intensity to be heard in both of these works; a disciplined but nonetheless questing approach, leading to music that vibrates within the body while also reaching for the shimmer of something that seems astral and celestial.

Guitartist Sharif Sehnaoui is one of the primary movers and shakers on the fledgling Beirut improvised scene. Together with Mazen Kerbaj, Raed Yassin and Charbel Haber, he keeps the flame of creative music burning. To his credit, his music has made no compromise, meaning it can be tough going and unrepentant.
On Old And New Acoustics he presents two tracks. One lengthy, "To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before" (at 33:55), and the shortish "Trane" (7:30). Here he goes solo with no effects or overdubs. Just Sehnaoui and his guitar (was it prepared?) play as if it were a percussive instrument and sometimes a harp. He cascades notes both with tapping strings, plucking and rubbing his instrument. All of which subverts the traditional guitar format to create a frenetic assembly of tones and chimes. Sehnaoui runs through a series of musical cells that exploit tension and release. He deftly maneuvers the pieces from high energy to oddly tuned revelations of sound. All to great effect.

After a few initial strokes of rasping chordal resonance and grey-tinged spring-and-bounce, the acoustic guitar that constitutes Sharif Sehnaoui’s source of all sounds starts being bumped and hit – mostly, but not always, gently – along a lengthy route denominated “To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before”. This 34-minute investigation of the instrument’s glowing (and less) qualities contains everything you should know about this CD, which is positively valuable for recurring dutiful listens. By excluding any kind of overdub or treatment, Sehnaoui develops entrancing circularity and obsessive rhythmical geometries improved by nonstop sparkling discharges and mind-influencing irregular accretions. This system considers the stringed body as a substitute cymbalom – or hammered dulcimer, if so preferred – rendering the solitary performer able to extract a transcendental concentrate that causes physical addiction to reiteration, a bit like a poor man’s functional minimalism. The record is ended by a shorter track – “Trane” – that utilizes the same approach in different regions of the frequency spectrum; at high volume, the consequence on the surrounding environment is noteworthy. It’s great when a musician maintains utter focus on a single course of action without diversions: in its meagreness of means, Old And New Acoustics reaches unanticipated altitudes through the sheer impact of a simple gestural architecture.

Kytarista Sharif Sehnaoui patří mezi nejdůležitější hybatele libanonské experimentální a impro scény. Nejenže je sám aktivním hudebníkem koncertujícím kromě arabské části světa často po Evropě a USA, ale je duší jedinečného a zřejmě jediného na improvizaci zaměřeného arabského festivalu Irtijal (koná se každoročně na jaře v Bejrútu) i vydavatelství, jež „publikuje to nepublikovatelné na libanonské umělecké scéně“. Jedenáctou položkou od založení labelu Al Maslakh („Jatka“) v roce 2005 je sólové album Old and New Acoustics, dle mně dostupných informací první sólové album Sharifa Sehnaoui. Sehnaoui používá akustickou kytaru spíše jako perkusivní nástroj než jako klasický drnkací strunný nástroj. Kytaru má položenou na klíně a někdy ke hře užívá různé paličky (některé navíc vpreparované mezi struny), jindy kovové ladičky, kterými různě rozvibrovává části kytary. Běžné je pro něj též užívání kovových válečků, jimiž přes struny na různých místech kytary přejíždí. Tak ostatně začíná i album Old and New Acoustics. V počátku první části To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before (odkazující ke klasické úvodní větě každého dílu původního seriálu Star Trek) pracuje Sehnaoui i s tichem, v kterém nechává dlouze zanikat naléhavosti preparované kytary. Později se přes zvonivě kovové zvuky promění proud hudby v pro Sharifa Sehnaoui typickou rytmickou, perkusivní hru. Tempo zrychluje a soustředěnost „bubnujícího“ hráče je až hmatatelná. Střed zhruba třiatřicetiminutové skladby se po chvilkovém ztišení i zklidnění nese v duchu divoce znějícího cimbálu. V tuto chvíli se však herní prostor již přirozeně rozšiřuje i na tělo kytary, kde se v rychlém tempu střídají údery paličkami do strun a dřevěné desky, a tvoří tak iluzi dvou nástrojů. Precizně tvořený tok hudby po opětovném ztišení dosáhne druhého kulminačního bodu, který je však již konečný. Druhá, výrazně kratší skladba začíná oproti předchozí okamžitě svižně a odehrává se spíše v nižších tónových polohách (kde dojde i na „klasické“ drnkání). Celá nahrávka byla pořízena v obývacím pokoji Sharifa Sehnaoui a pod zvukem je podepsán Fadi Tabbal.

Old and New Acoustics, c’est un peu un tour d’horizon que fait Sharif Sehnaoui de sa guitare. En deux temps (le premier morceau dure plus de trente minutes, le deuxième seulement sept), il explore son instrument sans en passer par l’overdubbing et sans retravailler son enregistrement.
Tout est donc là. Tout est offert à l’auditeur. Les notes étouffées comme le branlement sympathique des cordes. La chanson rebondie d’une baguette frappant en cadence, des bribes de rythmes que Sehnaoui agence comme s’il était plus percussionniste que guitariste. Ce qui ne l’empêche pas de l’être encore de temps en temps, guitariste…
Par exemple lorsqu’il invente une mélodie de petit automate ou se concentre sur deux ou trois gimmicks. Ou aussi, comme sur Trane, quand il donne dans un folk bizarre: on pense à la Mongolie, à de grands plateaux où naissent des parasites qui forment de beaux contre-chants. C’est assez rare à entendre et assez beau à voir.

Jedan od dvojice ‘difoltno’ osumnjičenih za eksperimente na multimedijskoj sceni Bejruta, gitarist električar Sehnaoui snimio je sasvim solidan album. Otvara ga skladba ironičnog naslova «To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before». Bez puno okolišanja uvodi teksturu akustične gitare preparirane štapićima i položene u horizontalu, te simultano trzane objema rukama u 34 minute nepretencioznog temeljnog tona (dronea). Usprkos povremenim ubrzavanjima, Sehnaoui uskakuje natrag u tempo, a uz dodatak skladbe “Trane” ostvaruje još jedan neizbrušeni work in progress uradak.

Della ricca scena sperimentale di Beirut - capitanata dall'agitatore Mazen Kerbaj - il chitarrista Sharif Sehnaoui rappresenta uno degli elementi più dotati e avventurosi, uno di quei musicisti per cui l'esplorazione significa sempre e comunque abbandonare le rassicuranti sponde del conosciuto e affrontare pericoli sonori sempre nuovi.
Non che le pratiche improvvisative di Sehnaoui e soci non condividano con la ricerca europea degli ultimi quarant'anni elementi, traiettorie e strategie, ma c'è una cifra di grande precisione del gesto, una nettezza dell'intenzione, che fa della ricerca del chitarrista libanese un'esperienza da condividere, qualora si sia disposti a porsi anche come ascoltatori su un terreno di sperimentazione.
Accade anche in questo Old and New Acoustics, costruito attorno alla "To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before" e alla più concise "Trane," terreni di conquista per tecniche estese[prevalentemente percussive]che fanno generare alla chitarra acustica ipnotici ticchettii, raggelati arpeggi e un allucinato sgocciolio di note che sembrano rapprendersi come mercurio al contatto con la membrana uditiva.
Folk alieno, gesto autistico di bambino contro una ringhiera infinita, delicatissima esplorazione molecolare del vibrare delle corde... vecchie e nuove acustiche.

There's a precious little, in fact no, info provided about how lebanese guitarist Sharif Sehnaoui transforms the old acoustics of his solo guitar into these impressive new acoustics - obviously some drone-inducing contact microphone has been wired into his instrument that intensifies the vibrations as Sehnaoui strums, fingers and also mallets his guitar like a percussion instrument. And it sounds great - music of near orchestral textural and harmonic variety plucked from a small canvas.

Gitarristen Sharif Sehnaoui är från Beirut. Tillsammans med Mazen Kerbaj, Christine Sehnaoui Abdelnour och flera andra har han under de senaste tio åren gjort staden till ett centrum för musik och improvisation. Inte minst genom den återkommande festivalen Irtijal och naturligtvis etiketten Al Maslakh. Det var där jag första gången hörde både honom, Christine och Mazen. Till skillnad från de två sistnämnda är han en jazzhabitué, som gärna hade haft en frifräsig trio. Men i brist på intresse från kamraterna gick de en annan väg, via ljud, omdefiniering av instrumenten och allmän experimentlusta, som ansluter till den förnäma avantgardetraditionen inom många konstområden i Mellanöstern. Al Maslakh öppnade sin utgivning med en märklig soloskiva med Mazens trumpet följt avRouba3i, där våra tre vänner slagit sig samman med Ingar Zach. I mina öron en av de kanske viktigaste plattorna de senaste tio åren.
Det var så jag själv kom i kontakt med denna scen för sex-sju år sedan. Sedan dess har jag hört mycket på Sharif. Han är lågmäld, undviker stora utspel, men har gärna kört med litet dämpade teatrala sätt att använda sin gitarr. Resultatet har blivit en rad olika klanger, som han verkar ha samlat på sig i en inre formbok.
Hans soloalbum innehåller två stycken. Först den långa ”To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before” och den korta ”Trane”. Under närmast andäktiga 33 minuter får han gitarren att klinga genom gnidning, försiktiga slag, mild knäppning och mycket koncentration. En pockande känsla skapas. Koncentrationen är av det sköra slag, där den berömda knappnålen kan höras falla. Rytmen är närvarande men inte för dans, snarare en inre trans. Han knyter an till den mer drömska delen av frijazzen på 60- och 70-talen. Långsamt utvecklar han de olika parametrarna som om han lyssnade fram musikens ström. Det är mycket vackert, stilla och ibland till och med vemodigt, som om han satt ensam och spelade i sorg. Det är en ovanlig känsla i friform.
Den avslutande sju minuter långa ”Trane” med sin flödande teknik är en personlig kärleksförklaring till jazzen. Det låter inte mycket jazz, men ekot är där. Den är den skugga som han sökt sig till. Ett personligt album av Sharif Sehnaoui, där han får visa sin egen väg, och genom att peka bakåt ringar han in sin nutid. Han intar med det här albumet en alldeles egen poetisk position i dagens musik.
