There is a distinct sense of the celebration of his 75th year on this good earth as trombonist Roswell Rudd continues the journey through his singular musical universe on his superb The Incredible Honk. Criss-crossing the paths he took when he first reconnected with ethnomusicologist producer and soul mate Verna Gillis, Rudd undertakes a sonic sojourn from the heartland of America, through Cuba, Scotland, continental Europe, the Far East and West Africa, returning to his beloved Kerhonkson. His musical cohorts include: celebrated Cuban tres player David Oquendo, heard here on guitar and vocals; bluesy pianist Lafayette Harris; celestial vocalist Sunny Kim; legendary bluegrass fiddler Michael Doucet; and mystical Chinese sheng player and vocalist Wu Tong. In a series of masterly collaborations, Rudd comes up with one of his finest performances since Keep Your Heart Right (Sunnyside, 2008).
Once again, Rudd pays tribute to the art of song in inimitable fashion. His grasp of melody is absolutely flawless and so utterly pure that he seems to almost exist in a parallel universe, where he can do no wrong. Rudd's musicality is so superior and his voicing and attack so perfect that he matches the seemingly limitless expanse that the human voice traverses at the hands of Kim and Tong. While this mammalian tonal palette has always been the hallmark of Rudd's playing—with down and dirty growls and smears, voiced with tremulous glissandi—here, Rudd has elevated his playing to a new level, uninhabited by any other trombonist playing today. His brawny attack and array of tonal colors is matched only by his elastic, brassy timbres. On "Blue Flower Blue," for instance, Rudd soars unfettered as Tong scats his way through the Chinese traditional song, and matches the traditional wooden harmonica-like sheng with spectacular gutbucket sounds. He matches the pristine vocals of Kim with a husky, controlled voicing of his own on "Alone On the Moon," and inhabits the same mystical space as Kim on the Korean traditional, "Arirang."
Rudd puts on a master display of trombone virtuosity as he descends to the depths of gutbucket glory on "BRO," the magisterial collision of American and West African blues. This spectacular musical journey continues through the brooding improvisations of "Ngoni Vortex" and "Airborne," and Rudd conjures memories of Don Cherry's great African adventures as well as Pharoah Sanders's meeting with Moroccan Gnawa master, Maleem Mahmoud Ghania, on Trance of the Seven Colors (Axiom, 1994). "Airborne" has some of the most magical melodic exchanges between ngoniba-master Bassekou Kouyate and Rudd, but it is the glassy brilliance of Wu Tong's voice and sheng and the almighty melodism of Rudd's trombone on "Danny Boy" that sets the album apart. So inventive is Rudd that he turns this elementally sad ballad into a triumphant song with his masterful voicing of the soul. Rudd takes little twists and turns in the melody, filling it with growling phrases as he brings this memorable album to a close.

Legendary trombonist Roswell Rudd has reached yet another milestone in his celebrated and remarkably varied career, his 75th birthday. Through the years, Rudd has shown an affinity for music and musicians from all over the world along with a love for collaboration. His new Sunnyside recording, The Incredible Honk, is a collection of some of his recent adventures proving that Rudd continues to surprise and astound listeners.
Rudd has always had an open mind and big ears. While studying at Yale University, he was a member of a successful trad-jazz ensemble. Rudd soon moved to New York City where he became involved in the progressive sounds of the jazz avant-garde, playing with luminaries Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, and Steve Lacy. As an academic, Rudd taught ethnomusicology at both Bard College and the University of Maine and assisted Alan Lomax with a number of projects.
Rudd’s wide musical scope has been well documented, especially in the last decade. He has recorded with musicians from Mali (MALIcool, Sunnyside), Mongolia (Blue Mongol, Sunnyside), and Latin masters of Puerto Rico via New York (El Espiritu Jibaro, Sunnyside) just to name a few. The Incredible Honk showcases Rudd’s talent alongside a number of ensembles, including Cajun legends Michael Doucet & Beausoleil, Malian griots, and his own quartet.
The CD begins with a supple arrangement of the classic Nina Simone song “Feeling Good” by Ivan Rubenstein-Gillis that sets the eccentric tone of the proceedings. “Dame La Mano” is a moving duo performance with guitarist/vocalist David Oquendo of the Cuban folkloric group, Raíces Habaneras. Michael Doucet and Beausoleil provide a dancing Cajun waltz on “C’etait Dans La Nuit” with lovely violin and trombone solos along with a lovely vocal feature for Emily Haines. The remarkable sheng player and vocalist Wu Tong (best known as a member of Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble) provides liltingly beautiful and unique performances on “Blue Flower Blue” and the Irish traditional song “Danny Boy.”
Rudd has developed strong relationships with a group of musicians that have appeared regularly with him over the last few years. “Berlin, Alexanderplatz” has the trombonist playing movingly alongside his regular bassist Ken Filiano and pianist Lafayette Harris, Jr. The trio adds the brilliant vocalist Sunny Kim for the somber “Arirang,” the lovely “Alone with the Moon,” and the spirited, Broadway inspired “Kehonkson: The Muse-ical.”
The Malian connection reappears on three tracks of the record. Rudd met ngoni master Bassekou Kouyate while in Mali during 2004. They had an immediate rapport and it was obvious they had to play together. The recording of “BRO” (their nickname for each other), “Ngoni Vortex,” and “Airborne” was made while Bassekou was on tour with his ensemble in the States and was able to meet Rudd in Upstate New York. These tracks are fantastic examples of creative minds making music that is both spontaneous and inspired.
What better way to celebrate one of the most generous and spirited musicians in generations than a beautiful collection of heart felt music? Here’s to Roswell Rudd and another 75 years of The Incredible Honk.

In his mid-seventies at the time of these recording sessions, trombonist Roswell Rudd takes the listener on a worldwide journey with his diverse musical interests. He explores a couple of widely known songs, though his bluesy take of "Feeling Good" is a funky affair showing off his chops with a mute and on open horn as organist Arne Wendt and pianist Ivan Rubenstein-Gillis lead the rhythm section behind him. His take of "Danny Boy" showcases Wu Tong on sheng (a bamboo predecessor to the harmonica), followed by the leader's sassy muted horn accompanied by bassist John Lindberg, with Tong achieving an organ-like sound as he rejoins them. Rudd also ventures to Latin America, interpreting the Cuban traditional piece "Dame la Mano" with guitarist/vocalist David Oquendo. Rudd even composed the Cajun-flavored "C'Etait dans la Nuit" to feature fiddler/vocalist Michael Doucet and Beausoleil, along with penning "BRO" to play with an impressive group of musicians from Bali playing exotic instruments. The Incredible Honk is one of the rare CDs that will broaden the listening experience of everyone.
