Музыку лондонского квинтета Polar Bear называют «авант-джазом» и «пост-джазом», однако, столь мудреная терминология отнюдь не означает, что за вывеской Polar Bear скрывается нечто труднодоступное и элитарное. Наоборот, Polar Bear, возможно, -единственный шанс джаза вернуться к массовой публике, достучаться до аудитории, которая давно списала эту музыку с корабля современности.
Автор музыки Polar Bear - барабанщик Себастьян Рошфор, один из самых талантливых и обсуждаемых молодых джазменов Англии последних лет. В 2005 году к квартету, состоявшему из барабанщика Рошфора, тенор-саксофонистов Марка Локхарта и Пита Уорхэма и контрабасиста Тома Херберта, присоединился компьютерный кудесник Джон Бертон, выступающий под псевдонимом Leafcutter John. Это пополнение в составе группы решило ее судьбу. Записанный в новом составе альбом «Held On The Tips Of Fingers» был сразу номинирован на престижную награду «Mercury Music Prize». Впервые за ее историю в числе номинантов появилась чисто инструментальная группа. Диск «Held On The Tips Of Fingers» - один из самых ярких джазовых альбомов современности. Этот словно сорвавшийся с цепи боп вполне легко представить себе в фильмах Эмира Кустурицы или Леонида Гайдая, здесь полно запоминающихся мелодий, а наблюдать за трюками Лифкаттера Джона не менее интересно, чем следить за мыслью солирующих саксофонистов.

'Held on the Tips of Fingers' is one of the most celebrated and important modern works of experimental Jazz, combining elements of electronica, funk, drum and bass, free jazz and indie rock. New album to come on the 9th of June 2008.
"'Held on The Tips Of Fingers' is fast becoming a classic UK jazz album, even though only released in 2005. It was selected by Jazzwise magazine as one of 100 Jazz Albums That Shook The World, placing together with iconic albums such as Kind Of Blue and Keith Jarrett's Cologne Concert.
The band who have earned a reputation as one of the most creative acts on the UK music scene. Polar Bear's raw-boned, dramatic music mixes jazz with an electronic soundscape and a punk sensibility, underpinned by break-beat and rock rhythms. Combined with their compelling contrapuntal melodies and driving energy it's a sound that has already won them critical acclaim and a devoted audience. On this album, electronic artist Leafcutter John further expands the realms of their sonic world.
Held On The Tips Of Fingers includes nine original compositions by drummer and bandleader Sebastian Rochford, who is as likely to listen to Bjork, Devendra Banhart, Beethoven and Pig Destroyer as he is to Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane.

"So long as you don't happen to be sitting behind him in a cinema, drummer, bandleader and big hair owner Seb Rochford is a heartening sight. His familiar silhouette at a gig promises the best of London's new scene. Like his legendary hair, his music runs wild and free, and as his second album with Polar Bear shows, increasingly deserves attention.
Along with bands like Spaceways Inc. and The Thing, Polar Bear combine the fervour of free jazz with the intensity of punk. It seems its an approach whose time has come, with other groups like Hypnotoad and even The Bad Plus also ploughing the same furrow. Unburdened both by punk primitivism and by improv's disdain for its audience, new skronk bands like Polar Bear are the most exciting development for years in post-jazz music.
Rochford has been honing his skills for a while now as a part of DIY music collective F-IRE but finally made a splash last year with the finely crafted debut Dim Lit. Despite rumoured offers to join the new band of ex-Libertine Pete Doherty, he's stayed true to his music, picking up the BBC's rising star award along the way.
The new record Held On The Tips Of Fingers continues his momentum, with the band's lean line up of bass, drums and two tenor saxophones used to the full. Though a twin tenor frontline may sound risky, it's interesting to hear how the boisterous Pete Wareham alternately blends and contrasts with the more measured Mark Lockheart on tracks like "Argumentative".
Electronica artist Leafcutter John has also been newly recruited and fills out the sound throughout, fizzing like R2D2 on dexedrine during "To Touch The Red Brick". But it's the gutbucket grooves supplied by Rochfords drums and bassist Tom Herbert that really get you in the chest, going like the clappers on "Your Eyes The Sea" while the horns give it both barrels.

It's now three years on from Polar Bear's last album, Held On The Tips Of Fingers. It's not surprising that it's taken the band a while to get back in the studio and put something substantial together. The shock-headed and ubiquitous Seb Rochford has been working on so much stuff in the last couple of years in and out of the F-IRE collective, that we should be grateful that he had the time to return to this fabulous combo. The self-titled third album is a triumph.
This time around, rather than Rochford and bassist, Tom Herbert, being the lynchpins, it's been left to the drifting lo-fi tenor sax combo of Pete Wareham and Mark Lockheart to lead us into the Bear's world of vaguely dubby, glitchy, but always groovesome post-jazz. But this isn't to say that the bass doesn't hold the centre like the biggest, most dependable hitching post you could care to tether your improv horse to. There's rather more of a slinky Carribbean aspect to the mix now, like Sonny Rollins fed through Supercollider. Opener, Tay, shimmies into the room riding on Herbert's bass, and Tomlovesalicelovestom is a spry skip through the most charming tune they've yet written. Leafcutter John's contributions are never overly pushy, though on this number he uses squeaks and squalls to dot the track with Clanger-like noises. If the Alice referred to is Coltrane, she'd approve of the cosmic bufoonery, I'm sure. Meanwhile Voices finds the band in pure digital land, filled up with chiming itchy bells and Industry is a crawl through breathy melancholy and exclamation. Like another track, It Snows Again, there's a gradual bulid up of tension that speaks volumes about the way in which they approach their work these days.
For a band who could, at the drop of a hat, shred wallpaper if they so desired, Polar Bear is a surprisingly restrained affair, but that's no disappointment. Rather, the tunes and grooves contained herein speak of maturity, consideration and a great sense of just when to get weird on our collective asses.
The second track (perversely titled Goodbye) breaks into a space invaders-in-Birdland place halfway through, but always the theme's nailed again before the closing two minutes of post-Soft Machine repeat and drone electronica. Equally perversely named, Joy Jones, ends it all with beautifully funereal dissonance. It's a wonderfully liberating sense of release and control in even measure that makes Polar Bear such a fine record. Welcome back, boys...

Categorising Sebastian Rochford poses problems. Jazz is at the
heart of his work, yet his understanding of and engagement
with a wide range of genres are such that it's impossible to
shoehorn his recordings into neat and tidy boxes. Peepers is
Rochfords fourth album as the leader and percussionist of the
London-based Polar Bear, alongside collaborators Leafcutter
John, Tom Herbert, Pete Wareham and Mark Lockheart. It
confirms that the unassuming but sharply focused young Scot is
pursuing his muse as openly and as adventurously as possible,
studiously avoiding any straight retreads of his previous work
while letting a distinctive composers voice come to the fore
More than its predecessors (2004's Dim Lit, 2005's Mercury
Prize-nominated Held On The Tips Of Fingers and 2008s Polar
Bear), Peepers sounds very close to a live Polar Bear
performance. The kind of session that has won the group a
diverse audience with exuberant music that opens out into
moments of freewheeling abstraction. Rochford's gift for
melodic writing acquires new depth on this latest venture,
where the music displays both art and pop sensibilities in the
most organic and coherent fashion. I wanted to open the music
up with a different kind of harmony, he says
Above all there is a sense of completeness in the emotional
sub-text of Rochfords writing. Peepers has moments of
unbridled joy like the euphoric Happy For You where the whole
band bounces on a rock beat without resorting to cliche. In
the front line, the two tenor saxophones create prickly,
grainy timbres and also let rip with solos that contrast the
marked difference in tone between the two players. If there is
a certain ruggedness in the way that the instruments come
across in the performance, it is wholly intended. Rochford
insisted on simple working conditions
The recording process was definitely different this time, he
explains. I wanted to record this album as raw and spontaneous
as possible with us just setting up in a room and playing,
with no separation or headphones. I thought this would alter
the way we played together in the studio, hearing how the tone
of our instruments blended naturally like we do in rehearsals
or gigs
Many of my favourite albums were recorded this way so I wanted
to try it and see. I also wanted to record the tunes when they
were in a more naive state, so I didnt give most of the music
to everyone till just before the recording, when we had two
gigs at north London venue the Vortex and then two days in
the studio
Such a relative lack of preparation might unsettle many bands,
but Rochford's desire to challenge himself and his band
members is an essential part of his creative drive. In the
last few years this has produced music that has been widely
acclaimed, including a BBC Jazz Awards Rising Star gong and
the inclusion of Held On The Tips Of Fingers in Jazzwise
magazines 100 Jazz Albums That Shook The World and The
Guardians 1000 Albums To Hear Before You Die. He has
performed with everyone from Joanna MacGregor and Andy
Sheppard, Brian Eno and David Byrne, to Pete Doherty and
Herbie Hancock, and as part of Acoustic Ladyland and Basquiat
Strings, as well as in his own projects Fulborn Teversham,
Room Of Katinas and Big Dave
If his bandmates provide Seb Rochford with a high degree of
technical and creative skill to help fulfil his artistic
vision, they are also capable of gelling as an ensemble - by
no means an obvious occurrence among virtuoso musicians. Much
of the success of Peepers results from precisely this
cohesion, as well as the freshness of Rochford's writing. The
unsettling crackle that John draws from his laptop on Drunken
Pharoah' is vividly enhanced by the close harmonising of the
mighty twin tenor sax frontline while the drums and bass keep
a tight lid on the bottom end of the music. Everybody plays
with great attention to sonic detail
Elsewhere, The Love Didn't Go Anywhere sees Leafcutter John
play guitar on a beautifully loping piece that has the subtle
afterglow of classic Roxy Music, with Bryan Ferry's vocal
replaced by the rapier glide of the two reeds, while Tom
Herberts hefty double bass pounds out concise but penetrating
lines. Interestingly, prior to the sessions, Rochford listened
to a lot of 60s soul (Aretha and Marvin Gaye), an influence
that he has channelled with more guile than is immediately
discernible
Rochfords bandmates have that vital mixture of experience and
youth, maturity and energy that often defines the best
ensembles in improvised music. Tenor saxophonist Mark
Lockheart has been a highly respected player on the British
jazz scene since the early 80s, when he debuted with the
revered big band Loose Tubes. Pete Wareham, the groups other
tenor player, is best known as the leader of Acoustic Ladyland
(in which Rochford also drums). Double bassist Tom Herbert was
also an original member of Warehams band and has racked up a
huge list of credits through his work with anybody from
stellar jazz soloists Andrew McCormack and Finn Peters to
membership of 2009 Mercury prize nominees The Invisible
Finally, Leafcutter John, who joined Polar Bear following
their debut release, is an irrepressibly open-minded artist
intent on exploring as many novel sound worlds as possible,
while retaining a connection to folk music of the most
ancestral kind. The producer of four solo albums, the
versatility of John's work at any given point is breathtaking
Perhaps his most significant contribution to Peepers is the
unsettling Middle Eastern influence on Finding Our Feet
(featuring his own recorded vocal), and it's with Johns
influence that Polar Bears live performance transcends its
base elements, featuring as it does playful interjections of
noise triggered by games console controllers, and a balloon
solo
On his accompanists Rochford makes a telling observation. Our
friendship is really important to me. If you're friends it
makes a big difference to how you and the music grow. Theyre
all open to new things and our friendship means that its
about more than just music. Everyones coming from a different
place with different influences but can share in the same
concept. Its an exciting thing. It means things can stay
open
Peepers thus stands as another strong document of both Seb
Rochford's development as a bandleader and writer as well as
player. This is a group album that could not have been born
without the strength of character of each musician involved, a
superb, rich whole that is very much more than the sum of its
illustrious parts. Its also about vision. The word peepers
is another way of saying eyes, Rochford says mischievously
