#777Robert L. Willis, 29 September 1934, Cabiness, Georgia, USA. This bawdy blues singer is best known outside the circuit for his ribald 1972 jukebox hit "Stoop Down Baby, Let Your Daddy See" and for being the cousin of Chuck Willis, but he has maintained a career as a popular working musician for over six decades.Born in rural Georgia and raised in Atlanta, Willis had a short spell in the military before joining his cousin's touring show in 1954. Chuck, who was at the time enjoying a string of hit singles on the OKeh Records label, employed his cousin as a valet, chauffeur, singer, and guitarist. Chick made his own recording debut in 1956 with the single "You're Mine", but following the death of Chuck in 1958 scraped around the live circuit for several years, both as a solo artist and as a sideman to performers such as Elmore James. He stumbled on a more lucrative angle during this period, building up a catalogue of lewd and suggestive material that were too rude to be played on the radio but proved popular on the jukebox market. In the years since "Stoop Down Baby, Let Your Daddy See" was issued on the tiny La Val label in 1972, Willis has rarely strayed from the song's themes and in the process has created a lucrative career for himself as "The Stoop Down Man". In the late 80s, he recorded the first in a string of albums for Ichiban Records.
#777Chick began working with his cousin, Chuck Willis, a rollicking R&B showman who was later known as the “King of the Stroll”. Throughout the middle 50’s and up until Chuck’s death in 1958, Chick toured incessantly with Chuck’s review all over the country. It was with this band that Chick solidified his concept of a satisfying stage show and emerged from this period with a wealth of valuable experience. Chick has since fronted his own units and has become one of the most in-demand performers on the Blues and R&B circuit. His penchant for raucous humor was undoubtedly primed when he gigged in the 60’s with Rudy Ray Moore of “Petie Wheatstraw” fame. He even snagged a small part in the movie. He also had a small part in the Buddy Holly story. In addition to being a first rate guitarist and vocalist, Chick plays drums, keyboard, harmonica, and bass. Sometimes he plays the guitar with tongue and under his legs. Anything is possible in his pursuit to electrify an audience with his dynamic stage presence.
Willis takes things a little more seriously than usual, concentrating largely on covers of material by Percy Mayfield, Howlin' Wolf, Clarence Carter, and Guitar Slim. His own contributions include "I Ain't Jivin' Baby" and "Bow-Legged Woman" (he couldn't resist the raunchy stuff entirely!).
