"Mr. Sabbagh avoided direct allusions to the saxophone totems. What he is working toward, simply and effectively, is a sincerely personal vocabulary."
–Nate Chinen, New York Times
Saxophonist and composer Jerome Sabbagh was born in Paris in 1973 and has been living in New York since 1995. A prolific forward-thinking composer, as well as a musician with a deep connection to the well of the jazz tradition, he has recorded six albums as a leader. Jerome Sabbagh was one of Paul Motian's last saxophone players. After one gig together, shortly before he passed, the legendary drummer asked him to play for a week at the Village Vanguard, in his "New Trio" with guitarist Ben Monder, in September 2011.
Jerome Sabbagh’s longstanding quartet with Ben Monder, Joe Martin and Ted Poor, a band which has been together since 2004, has released three albums, the critically acclaimed North, Pogo and The Turn.
Jerome has recorded an album exclusively devoted to standards, One Two Three, in a saxophone trio setting with Ben Street and Rodney Green. I Will Follow You is a freer project featuring European drum legend Daniel Humair and Ben Monder. Plugged In, sparked by a CMA/FACE grant, is an electric project co-led with Belgian keyboardist Jozef Dumoulin, with Patrice Blanchard and Rudy Royston.
Jerome Sabbagh’s also performs as part of the collective trio Lean with Simon Jermyn and Allison Miller, in the co-led Sabbagh/Tuohey Group, and as a duet with Danny Grissett.
Jerome Sabbagh’s most recent project, with which he recorded No Filter, is a band co-led with guitarist Greg Tuohey, with Joe Martin on bass and Kush Abadey on drums.
Jerome Sabbagh has shared the stage with Victor Lewis, Bill Stewart, Jeff Ballard, Greg Hutchinson, Billy Drummond, Justin Brown, Eliot Zigmund, Andrew Cyrille, Damion Reid, Reggie Workman, Vicente Archer, Matt Penman, Joe Sanders, Steve Cardenas, Lage Lund, Mike Moreno, Gilad Hekselman, Dan Tepfer, Pete Rende and Jean-Michel Pilc, among others.
As a sideman, Jerome has been involved most notably with pianist Laurent Coq's quartet, Guillermo Klein's Los Guachos and the Marta Sanchez Quintet.
He has played in some of the world's most famous festivals, including Newport, San Francisco, Paris, Tokyo and Medellin. In 2011, DownBeat included him in their "Rising Stars" list for tenor saxophone.

For the last five years, I have been playing regularly in a trio format in various clubs in New York City. I started out at the Bar Next Door, in the West Village. In the beginning, I didn't take much time to prepare for these concerts. I would spend most of my energy practicing the saxophone and writing music for my quartet with Ben Monder, Joe Martin and Ted Poor, a band with which I still play today. I naively thought that playing standards in a trio would be comparatively easy. Boy, was I wrong ...
In a trio, a saxophonist plays much more often. You need skills, imagination and stamina. You don't get the benefit of a guitarist or a pianist whose accompaniment might help you pace or spark you to reach greater heights and whose presence gives you the opportunity to rest.
In a trio, the genius of the masters and the depth of their legacy are both inspiring and daunting. I find that to be true in jazz in general but perhaps even more so with this particular instrumentation.
In a trio, most of all, the sparseness of the setting casts a shining light on the basic elements of jazz: melody, rhythm, harmonic ideas. A saxophonist alone with a bass player and a drummer constantly makes instinctive choices in these matters, as all improvisers do, but in a trio, these choices have even more impact on the direction of the music. More thought out choices also have to be made, from selecting a repertoire of inspiring songs to play on to figuring out who to play with. It's an opportunity to understand who you really are and to work on becoming who you want to be.
Ben Street has always been one of my favorite bass players, ever since I heard him in Kurt Rosenwinkel's quartet when I first moved to New York. His mastery of the basics of jazz and his willingness to keep exploring them serve him well in many different musical endeavors and he has a very strong musical identity. Among all the musicians I know, he is one of the most devoted to his art.
I first played with Rodney Green when Ben Monder asked me to sub for him last minute at the Bar Next Door. From the very first notes, I knew that we were bound to play together. Rodney quickly became my favorite drummer to play trio with. I love his sound, the way he listens and how well he develops ideas.
As in my previous albums, I chose to record all in the same room, to be as close as possible to a concert setting. I hope you will enjoy our music.

The opening cut on One Two Three is pianist George Shearing's bop classic "Conception". Do not, however, let this fool you. Although tenorist Jerome Sabbagh burns, this is not simply a blowing session nor is it really, as Sabbagh suggests, his take on the standards. While there are tunes such as a somewhat campy (how could it not be?) version of "Tea for Two," a fresh reprise of Coleman Hawkins' classic interpretation of "Body and Soul" and a bopped-up "Just in Time" demonstrate these are not standard standards. This is a creative take on some of the greats of jazz that still remain true to the songs' intent.
Sabbagh has bassist Ben Street and drummer Rodney Green as his rhythm section and they for the most part stay out of his way, leaving room for the leader's creative improvisational ability. Far from growing tiresome, the tenor engages as the session progresses. Most enjoyable are the delightfully quirky translations of Monk's "Work" and "Boo Boo's Birthday". Bill Evans' beautiful "Turn Out the Stars" has the gorgeous melody intact and Sabbagh takes it to stimulating places. A wonderfully swinging version of Bud Powell's "Monopoly" and a sentimental take on Billy Strayhorn's "Chelsea Bridge" close out the CD, the latter containing brilliantly understated drum and bass work. Sabbagh's first two releases presented him with his working quartet in very different clime. The lack of guitar in this setting, which is exquisitely under-produced, combined with the song choices, shows just how lyrical a player Sabbagh can be.
Jérôme Sabbagh: saxophone;
Ben Street: bass;
Rodney Green: drums
