Like its Juno Award-nominated predecessor, One Take: Volume Two is a brilliant collection of in-the-moment improvisational magic and majesty. Saxophonist Phil Dwyer, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, pianist Robi Botos, and bassist Marc Rogers team-up on One Take: Volume 2 to produce some beautiful, intense and joyful jazz.
Toronto-based musician, producer, and record executive Peter Cardinali envisioned the One Take concept as “putting the musicians in the studio with no preconceived agenda.” Recorded in Toronto’s Phase One Studio January 13, 2005 One Take: Volume 2 justifies Cardinali’s faith in the music’s more-spontaneous, less-polished roots. Dwyer, Carrington and company has created a raw, intuitive gem.
“I think the process that was used on the One Take recording allowed us to achieve a level of spontaneity and relaxation which has been harder to find on many jazz recordings lately,” explained Dwyer. “For me it was quite evocative of the style of recording which inspired me as a young musician. Probably a big part of that was the fact that Terri Lyne was on the date. We played together a few times back in the early eighties with Steve Grossman, and having the chance to play with her again really reminded me of those days and that kind of energy.”
“Having spent a lot of the last 15 years playing overdubbed solos and piecing together ‘good takes’, it was refreshing to go into a studio and just play music!” Dwyer enthused. “Robi Botos has developed over the last few years into a pianist of stunning technical and improvisatory ability. He embraces the jazz piano tradition without being a slave to it, allowing his ear to lead his intuition. Also a wonderful player is Marc Rogers, who shines not only here but in a variety of other contexts. And Terri Lyne has been one of my absolute favorite drummers in the world since the first time I heard her in 1983. Her ride cymbal has so much pop that it lifts the music up a notch every time she hits it. She has huge ‘big picture’ ears and smarts, which gives her a great amount of musical agility. Her career is remarkable already, and I think she is just getting started!”
Terri Lyne Carrington was a child prodigy who played with trumpet great Clark Terry at age 10 and a year later won a full scholarship to Berkelee College of Music. When she was 17 Terri recorded TLC and Friends, her debut as a leader with Kenny Barron, Buster Williams, George Coleman, and her dad, Sonny Carrington. A producer and composer, most notably with vocalist Dianne Reeves, Carrington has recorded with Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, and Herbie Hancock and currently tours with Hancock’s electric and acoustic bands, guitarist Mike Stern, and saxophonist Greg Osby. Her latest CD as a leader, Jazz Is A Spirit, was recorded in 2002.
Robi Botos immigrated to Canada from Hungary in 1998. A winner of the Montreux Jazz Festival’s solo piano competition, he has appeared on several Canadian television networks. Botos plays with the Norman Marshall Villeneuve Sextet, saxophonist John MacMurphy, and with the Latin/funk/hip-hop sextet, Chiva.
Marc Rogers studied bass with John Patitucci and Victor Bailey in New York City and at Capilano College and University of North Texas. He’s worked on numerous Canadian television soundtracks and television shows in Toronto. He plays in the Jon Levine Band, Michael Kaeshammer Band, and has recorded with Norah Jones, Mike Stern, Joe Lovano, Holly Cole, and the James Brown Band.
Phil Dwyer studied at Banff Jazz Workshop at 16 and a year later in New York with Steve Grossman. In the mid-1980s he was a member of the Hugh Fraser Quintet and Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisers (VEJI) before moving to Toronto for 17 years and a busy studio career playing for commercials, films, and pop discs as well as performing with jazz musicians like Renee Rosnes and Randy Brecker and R&B greats like Aretha Franklin and The Temptations. Dwyer has won several Juno Awards including one with bassist Dave Young for Fables and Dreams and another with flugelhornist Guido Basso for Lost In the Stars.
On One Take: Volume 2 - Dwyer, Carrington, Botos, and Rogers cook-up a compelling, always-swinging, sizzling brew steeped in the jazz tradition, but fired by spontaneous creative inspiration. It’s a wonder!
