Anthem is a project I have been working toward my whole musical life, and is Part II of a pair of albums that began with my first RCA Victor release ...so far. While my prior recording focused on my playing and composing as solo pianist and dealt with the musical influences in my life up to that point, Anthem looks to the future, taking certain ideas I've always wanted to explore with my group conception and presenting them in a context featuring musicians uniquely capable of bridging the gap between melody, groove and improvisational adventure. In doing so, my goal is for this album to truly be my own "anthem" for a new, more inclusive form of personal expression.
I feel very privileged to have worked with the remarkable assemblage of musicians who gathered together for this date. I thank Jack, James, Mino, Christian and Richard for their artistry, their tremendous energy and enthusiasm, and for imbuing my music with such positive "life-force." Thanks also to James Farber and Greg Calbi; Steve Backer, Steven Gates, Joshua Sherman, David Neidhart, Steve Smith, Mark Tavern and everyone else at RCA Victor; my manager Cynthia Herbst; David Gonzalez for his words; my friends in NY, Columbus, Minneapolis, Canada and elsewhere for their helpful feedback about this music; my father for his constant loving support; and, as always, my late mother and brother Chris for their life inspiration. This project must have looked good on paper. Start with D.D. Jackson, a pianist and organist of almost unbounded potential; put him with the African bass-guitar phenom Richard Bona and the peerless drummer Jack DeJohnette; then add critically acclaimed saxophonist James Carter and veteran percussionist Minu Cinelu for spice on selected tracks. Too bad the lineup couldn't have left off there. But Jackson--who produced the album--also brought in violinist-guitarist Christian Howes, whose plugged-in wailing has all the charm of a car alarm going off at 3 a.m. The result is a schizophrenic mess, as Jackson's major-key arpeggios (think early ECM and New Age wedding marches) open up into frantic free-for-alls dominated by Howes and, less often, Carter. Bona gets off a couple of brilliant bass solos, but his wordless vocal on "Simple Song" is an oddity even on an album consisting of non sequiturs.

Jackson brought together an eclectic band to help him achieve his vision: violinist and guitarist Christian Howes, bass guitarist Richard Bona, drummer Jack DeJohnette, and percussionist Mino Cinelu.

In this quick follow-up to his solo piano date So Far, Jackson combines his piano with organ overdubs; this sound, combined with violinist Christian Howes, makes for an arresting and unique new sonority. Electric bassist Richard Bona, drummer Jack DeJohnette, and percussionist Mino Cinelu hold down the fort of rhythmic variety, and James Carter plays saxophone on a few cuts. Jackson wrote and arranged all of the material.
The first two pieces of the ten tracks really set the tone. The opener, "Spring Song," is a kinetic, fast samba with the collective whole, adding Howes on acoustic guitar as well as violin. It clearly defines Jackson's idealistic approach, buoyed by the churning percussion of DeJohnette and Cinelu. A swirling ostinato organ riff on the second cut, "Pat," leads to beautiful music inspired by Pat Metheny. Jackson's use of odd meters comes through on both the heavy, seven-beat calypso-blues pattern during "Carnivale" and the piano-oriented, breezy 5/4 of "Her Song." Gospel piano introduces "Water Dance," which employs another 5/4, classically tinged theme very much like chamber jazz, and that same gospel flavor shades the pop instrumental "Church," which takes on chameleonic dynamics that are difficult to peg or pigeonhole. Carter's squawky, overblown soprano sax, with Howes' violin attempting to match it, cements the hard bopping duel for "Showcase Blues," with Jackson's organ standing back while the front-liners extrapolate on lines that suggest the melody of "I Found a New Baby." On the loose free bopper "Dewey's Groove" (for Dewey Redman), Carter's histrionics inspire Jackson to go into his recognizable, Don Pullen-like freneticism. The remaining two pieces are the title track, a power-pop ballad with over nine minutes of primarily solos, and the pop ballad "Simple Song" with Bona's tiny, delicate, Milton Nascimento-styled ethno singing.
The high moments of this recording serve notice to the concept of original music being made in this modern era. Though not a complete, fully realized statement, there's enough here to suggest that Jackson is onto something with this approach.
