Cannonball Adderley was a happy man in an angry time. His success was largely based on that fact and so were his limitations. Called "the new Bird" because of his remarkable facility on the alto saxophone, he never plumbed the dark depths of sorrow the way his predecessor did: he was Ella Fitzgerald to Charlie Parker's Billie Holiday. Nor did he express the anger and rage of the times in the way his colleague, John Coltrane, did in the Miles Davis Sextet. For that, and for maintaining a multi-racial band, he was deemed by some, in a term not then in use, politically incorrect.
To use another term not then in use, Cannonball was a one-man outreach program. He was involved in the Reverend Jesse Jackson's Operation Breadbasket, and Jackson spoke at his funeral. The alto saxophonist made an LP titled A Child's Introduction to Jazz. And he spoke amusingly and informatively to audiences, even hosting a television talk show in 1972 in Los Angeles.
Cannonball was born Julian Edwin Adderley on September 15, 1928, in Tampa, Florida. His nickname was a corruption of Cannibal, given him in his youth because of his gargantuan appetite. At age twenty he was hired as the band director at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale; he worked there before and after an Army stint, where he also led bands. In the summer of 1955, a few months after Parker's death, he came to New York, intending to enroll at New York University and get a master's degree in education. His brother Nat, who plays cornet and trumpet, had just finished a job with Lionel Hampton, and the brothers planned to spend the summer with an aunt in the Bronx and check out the big city before driving back to Florida.
Nat takes up the story:
We called up Buster Cooper [a trombonist who later joined Ellington}, and he sent us down to the Bohemia to hear Oscar Pettiford and the band. We were just sitting there listening to Oscar and Kenny Clarke and Horace Silver. We had our horns — we knew better than to leave them in the car in New York. Jerome Richardson was supposed to be playing, but he had a record date and was late. Charlie Rouse came in, and Oscar asked him to sit in until Jerome got there. Charlie said he didn't have a horn, so Oscar said, "Well, there's a guy over there with a saxophone; borrow his." Charlie had met Cannonball in Florida and knew that he could play. So Cannonball came up, and Oscar had the intention of playing "I'll Remember April" very fast and getting rid of him, embarrassing him so he'd let Charlie use his horn. But Cannonball had been playing that tune, so he jumped in and rode it, and all of their mouths dropped open, and that's what happened.
We drove back down there a couple of nights later, and people were all lined up. The club owner came over and said, "Where you been?" That night, Kenny Clarke said, "I got a record date, and I want both of you." That was the end of the master's degree..Soon after, Quincy Jones and Clark Terry introduced the Adderleys to manager John Levy, who got them a deal with Mercury subsidiaries: EmArcy for Cannon and Wing for Nat. The brothers formed a working band with pianist Junior Mance, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Jimmy Cobb. Some of their work appears on this CD.
The Adderleys formed a partnership but, in their naivete, neglected to take out withholding taxes. So the brothers went to work as sidemen, paying back the government over the next two years, making more than they had as leaders. Cannonball played for a few weeks with Dizzy Gillespie, but finally the alto saxophonist decided to go with Miles Davis, who paid better, Nat says. The group was a quintet until Coltrane returned from his stint with Thelonious Monk to form the great sextet that made Miles's masterpiece, Kind of Blue.
By late 1959 the brothers reformed their group; this was the period of Cannonball's greatest popularity. But Cannonball's affable desire to let his audience in on what he was doing was looked down on by some musicians, who thought that even acknowledging listeners was showbiz Uncle Tomming. And Cannonball had the effrontery to at different times hire two European pianists, Victor Feldman and Joe Zawinul.
"We had some difficulty with the Muslims about Victor Feldman," Nat Adderley remembers.
[They] called him a blonde, blue-eyed devil. Cannonball wrote back a magnificent letter that I wish I had a copy of. Cannon said something to the effect of, "If you find me a black piano player who plays as well, composes as well, shows up on time, [and] will follow the tenets of what we believe being a band player is, then I might possibly consider maybe making an effort to consider hiring [him] — otherwise, you run your little religion and I'll run my little band."
* * *
The recordings collected here were made just prior to and during Cannonball's tenure with Davis, who paid him the unusual honor of appearing as a sideman on Cannon's Somethin' Else album for Blue Note. Two of these tracks, Limehouse Blues and Stars Fell on Alabama, actually feature the Davis group of the time, recording without the leader during a Chicago engagement. Coltrane does not play on the latter, which is a ballad. Lover Man, another torch song, is a fearless choice for Cannonball, being perhaps Charlie Parker's most notorious performance on record. He also enters Parker territory on the three selections with strings: Falling in Love with Love; Street of Dreams, immortalized by the great singer Lee Wiley; and The Masquerade Is Over, which Cannon later recorded with Nancy Wilson on an LP that revitalized her career.
Julian Adderley died of a stroke in Gary, Indiana on August 8, 1975. Nat Adderley should have the last word: "Cannonball is now revered by young musicologists as the epitome of what could have been. I wish when I was standing next to him all of those years that I had paid closer attention to what he played. I knew he was a great player, but I thought of him as my brother. Now I wish I'd listened closer."
