Wes Montgomery was the founder and remains the fount of jazz guitar as a crossover phenomenon. He established his instrument as an expressive equal of any other in modern jazz, then came to make music that captures and holds the affection of casual listeners and aficionados alike. He accomplished this feat by playing, always, with genuine, lyrical warmth — as well as by drawing on compelling, far-reaching melodic variations and a natural blues sensibility. His swing was so embracing that lines by the Champs, John Lennon, and the Mamas and the Papas took their place in his repertoire with works by Coltrane, Ellington, Miles, and Monk.
Montgomery was unabashed about his adaptations; he was in accord with his producers' intentions that his music be accessible to and find favor among the broadest possible audiences, rather than address an in-group of self-proclaimed jazz fans only. The guitarist thought of himself first and foremost as a working professional with a family to support.
Yet given room to stretch out, Montgomery inevitably dug for and uncovered depths of invention and feeling. He'd begun by recording under his given names (John Leslie) with Lionel Hampton in the late Forties, playing in the still-new style of Charlie Christian, not having developed his own sound. Montgomery arrived at his "golden thumb" technique, across-the-bar phrasing, and dynamic uplift, in his native Indianapolis after six years of nightly residence at the Turf Bar, from 9 pm to 2 am, and the Missile Room, until 4:30. He then caught some sleep before logging an eight-hour shift at a radio manufacturing plant.
Emerging from his hometown to record with his brothers Buddy (on piano) and Monk (on bass) as The Mastersounds in the late Fifties, Wes's style was full-blown. And though the context in which he played changed, his sound remained the same until in 1968, at age forty-five, he suffered a fatal heart attack.
If Montgomery was personally unassuming, with few illusions (he told a down beat interviewer just before his death, "There is a jazz concept to what I'm doing, but I'm playing popular music and it should be regarded as such"), his standard of excellence — as well as his wide and lasting popularity — face all improvising guitarists who have come after him: George Benson and Pat Martino, for sure, but also John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, and legions more. Impressions: The Verve Jazz Sides presents Montgomery's benchmarks and their implicit challenge; it can be enjoyed simply as a satisfying selection from his catalog too. From any perspective, the guitarist's performances on Impressions are choice; he's completely at ease with his material and well served by the supporting contexts (including the Wynton Kelly Trio with Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb, with whom in June 1965 he was Smokin' at the Half Note — all of the music issued here, in its entirety, for the first time in the US).
In fact, Impressions directs a fresh look at the erroneous notion that all of Montgomery's later studio work was marred by "sweetening". Johnny Pate's crisp settings of November '64 for West Coast Blues and Caravan, for instance, are models of economy, vigor, and contrast. His brightly voiced brass counter-riffs spur Montgomery on while staying out of his way and establishing themselves as indivisible from the full, fleet solos they enhance.
Oliver Nelson's larger-scale charts for Twisted Blues and Naptown Blues also offset Montgomery without interrupting him or blunting his drive. On the chestnut Golden Earrings (from a campy postwar spy movie starring Marlene Dietrich as a gypsy fortune teller), Nelson conjures an aura of mystery, with the pianist — Herbie Hancock, most likely — proposing a dissonant piano chord against which Montgomery outlines the main theme.
In the March '66 session Claus Ogerman arranges and conducts strings behind Wes, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Grady Tate, and congero Ray Barretto — but wisely leaves the core group alone to transform Wives and Lovers, the title song of a Hollywood farce originally purveyed by Jack Jones, into a credible jazz standard. Don Sebesky's date with Montgomery in that same year resulted in the guitarist's breakthrough album California Dreaming. Sebesky has an 18-piece ensemble at his command, but he, too, reserves one track for his core group: Sun Down is all Montgomery, bassist Richard Davis, Barretto, Tate, and Hancock (who solos tastefully) until the penultimate chorus and a coda.
Milestones and "'Round Midnight", with Nelson arranging and conducting again, are from Montgomery's first encounter with organist Jimmy Smith on September 21, 1966. The two instrumentalists were indeed a fine match, the latter's funky, spunky flash balanced by the former's subtler soulfulness. Nelson's touches — the clear head that becomes a fugue, parts of which recycle under the soloists as they comp for each other; selective use of low horns; and imaginative writing for brass and woodwinds — are indicative of his genius, which is underacknowledged today.
As Smith stretches the dramatic intervallic leaps of Monk's 'Round Midnight along an axis, Montgomery finds twists and turns in it that lead him to the realization of entirely new melodies. In quartet with Tate and Barretto, the organist and guitarist stick to more conventional territory — the blues a la "Frankie and Johnny", a minor treatment of a spiritual with Latin accents, a mid-tempo boogaloo — but there's no gainsaying their collaborative excitement, inspiration, and agreement on tone and effect.
Of course, making new melodies — frequently by reinterpreting and rhythmically energizing the chords that underlie the original ones — was Montgomery's stock in trade. He had a natural melodic gift and
affinity for the guitar, whose strings seem to sing gladly under the tender, confident caress of his thumb. He didn't take his gifts for granted; he continued to nurture them night after night in performance even after he left the low-pressure haunts of folks whose nightclubbing and workaday concerns he shared. With regard to his untimely demise it's ironic that his most widely disseminated recordings offer the world a sensibility that celebrates the moment by exposing its lushness, without undue or immature hurry.
Montgomery's dedication to his art and his empathy with working people are ultimately the qualities that suffuse his music and make it popular beyond either a coterie of connoisseurs or the commercial expectations of its Sixties origins — indeed, that render it timeless. Wes Montgomery was a guitarist who played pretty for the people — without cynicism or condescension but with honesty and understanding. Those impressions are confirmed, once and for all, by his Verve jazz sides.
