"In my humble opinion the benchmark in symphonic extreme metal has been raised to pretty ridiculous heights in the past year, with the likes of Gromth and Carach Angren pushing not only the boundaries in terms of sound and song-writing ability but also the envelope in terms of the narrative power of the genre.
Into the arena come UK six-piece Saturnian with an approach that while modern has as much in common with Dimmu and Cradle of Filth circa 2000. Yes, the production sounds 2012, but something about the way these guys (and gal) go about their business brings me back a decade or so. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because back then CoF were still one of my favourite bands (before Sony and all that followed).
While it isn’t unfair to say that Saturnian have a pretty standard approach to the genre, it has to be admitted that they do it well. “Dimensions” is a feast of muscular riffs that still show their NWOBHM roots, powerful, organic-sounding drumming with plenty of blasts and excellent harsh vocals. The keyboards are first-rate too, managing to reproduce that orchestral feel with maximum authenticity, and the female vocals, though sparse, work a treat to provide contrast and lift the songs. The bass is almost inaudible in the mix and does little more than fill out the sound.
Interestingly, on tracks like “Traces from the Past” the band incorporate classic British prog rock influences, demonstrating a level of versatility and musical ability that would make 99% of other bands jealous. If this is the kind of thing Saturnian can do on a debut, then they are definitely a band to watch for the future and one who I am sure will help put the UK back on the SBM map."
