Canada is known for having a slew of talented bands within their borders, but the international (and even national) scope is limited to certain specific areas of Canada, usually leaving the eastern provinces ignored, meaning that bands like FUNERAL FOG tend to go unnoticed…
FUNERAL FOG’s most obvious defect is, of course, their lack of originality, as all of their song titles (as well as band name) seem the be plucked from in one way or another from the Norwegian Black Metal scene (with the exception of “Grave Land”), but in a much too obvious fashion.
Initially I was put off by this, but after a while I decided to give it a proper spin and pretty much as I expected, the music was also reminiscent of older Norwegian Black Metal, though without the same spark or magic that many of the classics had. At times certain passages can spark an interest, but they’re often run into the ground with repetitiveness.
This project isn’t completely lost, however, some aspects could be salvageable, but some work is needed in order to bring things up to par.
