It merely takes you a single track to realise that IXXI is on to something spectacular in technically advanced black metal, but their album Elect Darkness happens to be an elusive postulate with only little validation. Two reasons account for my harsh comments!
The aforementioned extravagance is heralded by the band’s undisputed exegesis of how a modern day Mayhem, fronted by Attila Chisar [vocals] and Blasphemer [guitar], sounds like, perhaps with a few twists that yield some references to The Bloodline [a band featuring members from Carpathian Forest and Aborym] as well Snorre Ruch’s Thorns. All to no avail, because the two reasons disrupt the picture perfect!
The source of inspiration is simply too disturbing, signalling a band with little uniqueness – Attila certainly hasn’t patented his way of throaty, Hungarian-styled snarling nor has Mayhem won the right to sound like they do, exclusively, yet does it lessen my impression when a band reproduce such a brand… it’s an almost 100% match.
The second issue is that the compositional prowess decreases with each subsequent track, lowering any grade, no matter what other parameters characterize the album. Most musicians ask for a fair judgment and they obviously crave more than just a few spins in the player before any review is written, and I’ve granted the album several rotations prior to this review. But even if I disregard the present comparison to Mayhem, the album is too ordinary. The relentless up-tempo banging on the drums, the perpetual groove of the guitar riffs and the aural attacks of the singer succumb to an automatic, uninspiring nature, eventually causing a flatlining of material. Elect Darkness does show topical variation in its materiel, which is positive, but what is the purpose when songs just run flat?!
It takes more than just averagely skilled instrumentalists to create 55 minutes of attractive music, and there is indeed a reason why Mayhem has managed to score high grades with most of their records.
