Takasago Army' is the band Chthonic's 6th full-length album and the third with the same theme (the others; Seediq Bale and Mirror of Retribution). Before I'm going to praise this album I'm going to tell you all that I began listening to this band after I heard this album.
'Takasago Army' consists of 10 songs, and I actually like what I'm hearing, very much indeed! If we look back to the bands past we see that their sound has evolved a lot, both in terms of much better quality on the instruments, but also on their overall sound.
The album has also English and Taiwanese editions/versions, thought the Taiwanese version is only released in Taiwan, and makes the band more open to international listeners!
My very first impression of the album (and the band; as this was the first time I heard them) was a very interesting one, I'm of course relating on the heavy 'oriental' sound they got. The intro has a very soothing melody to it, letting us in the mood, and prepares us for the song "Legacy Of The Seediq" to begin! It fades in and we get some drumming and some oriental instrumentals. As of most of their songs on the album we hear the 'er-hu', a two stringed violin-like instrument that has formerly been play on past albums/songs by the ex-member Su-Nung but is now played by vocalist Freddy Lim instead. The sounds it can produce brings the band’s sound to another level and we're reminded that oriental instruments can be accompanied with pretty much any musical genre, it only requires skillful artists and that's not a problem in Chthonic's case!
The bands vocalist Freddy Lim varies his vocals from time to time; with both death growls and high-pitched shrieks and it sounds well balanced without any flaws. His vocal range is also something to praise as it's more than what a typical metal band can produce in my opinion. The bands leader and bassist Doris Yeh also acts as a backing vocalist in several choruses through-out the album and this gives even more power with the bands lyrics.
Two notable vocal-parts on the album is the WW2 surrender speech from Emperor Hirohito that we hear on 'Broken Jade' and the awards winning Taiwanese singer Tsiam Nga Bun (Chan Yia Wen) sings a part on 'Kaoru', but also the chorus from Takao featuring the guest vocalist Yu Tien. All this gives an overall quality to the album and makes it stand out from the crowd.
After several listen throughs of the whole album my over-all impression is very high! The songs I think grabbed me directly after the first listen through were Takao and Quell The Souls In Sing Ling Temple, but afterwards I can say that I love every single track on the album.
After this wonderful impression I can finally be happy that this summer has been an unforgotten one!!
Other notable songs that I love the most are: Kaoru and Broken Jade
This brings me to the final conclusion: I recommend this album to any fan of (heavy) metal with very melodic sounds but at the same time keeps the extreme sound they got from their older releases.
