Having followed in the footsteps of a band like BEHEMOTH, French outfit TEMPLE OF BAAL has transitioned rather smoothly from their early Black Metal sound towards a very precise and very heavy Death Metal aesthetic. Granted, theirs is not a sound that will necessarily reinvent the wheel but in terms of execution and atmosphere they are second to none. The latter is crucial here, as “Verses of Fire” is easily among the most richly textured albums of its kind that I’ve had the pleasure of listening to.
I was pretty impressed with their “Lightslaying Rituals” album, particularly in terms of said album’s deft balance between crunchy Death Metal and more wispy melodic dynamics, and on “Verses of Fire” they take this approach even further, though in a much darker way (while also incorporating the somewhat more downtuned and doom-ridden sound of the split with RITUALIZATION). Not content to simply blast away with reckless abandon, these Frenchmen display a keen sense of structure, pacing and melody throughout, making “Verses” an album that is as dark as it is dynamic.
Things kick off in somewhat nondescript fashion with the unnecessarily orthodox pounding of “ôï áóôÝñé 418” , but the band’s ever-expanding repertoire of tricks and gear-shifts comes into full display during the ominous Doom passages of “The 10th Aethyr,” the riff-tastic Black/Death hybridization of “Gates of Death” and the 10-minute epic “Walls of Fire,” where they break out planet-shifting grooves, wild cymbal splashes and a bevy of blood-curdling melodies that all coalesce into a classic exercise in extreme metal. Militant in its execution, mature in its composition and yet subtly playful when need be, “Verses of Fire” is yet another stellar addition to TEMPLE OF BAAL’s already impressive body of work.
